Dave Packer
Dave Packer is a fifth grader at Laketon Elementary School. During the "no talking" contest, Dave was the leader and recorder for the boys team. Dave was also the student who started the contest. His inspiration was from Mahatma Gandhi, who stayed silent for multiple days at a time. Dave is a dynamic character, because throughout the book he changes. Dave goes from hating Lynsey, and being immature, to realizing that girls really are not that scary.
Lynsey Burgess
Lynsey Burgess is also a fifth grade student, who goes to Laketon Elementary School. She was the leader and scoretaker for the girls team, in the "no talking" contest. At the last few minutes of the contest, Lynsey said a speech. This speech was planned out, and made sure that both the boys and the girls were tied in the amount of "non-legal" words. Lynsey is also a dynamic character. She changed throughout the book, becoming more mature and realizing that boys and girls do not always have to be fighting.
Mrs. Hiatt
Mrs. Abigail Hiatt, is the principal at Laketon Elementary School. She believed that the "no talking" contest was rude, and a complete waste of time. Mrs. Hiatt is a dynamic character, because throught the book she changes. At the final chapter of the book, Mrs. Hiatt joins into the contest. She found that there really is nothing wrong with not talking, and it helps you realize more around you.
Mr. Burton
Mr. Burton is the fifth grade reading and language arts teacher at Laketon Elementary School. Unlike Mrs. Hiatt, he had fun with the idea of not talking. Mr. Burton was taking a Human Development class, at a university, and wanted to write a research paper about the way the students reacted. On one of the days, Mr. Burton had all of the students make up a story. This was, of course said in three word sentences. Once you had said your sentence, the person to your left would continue on the story. Mr. Burton is a static character, because he never truly changed personality traits throughout the book.
